South African authorities have uncovered an illegal detergent manufacturing site in Boksburg where counterfeit household cleaning products were allegedly being produced and repackaged into containers resembling well-known brands.
Police uncover chemicals and fake packaging
The raid was conducted by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in the Windmill Park informal settlement.
Investigators found large quantities of chemicals and cleaning products, including bleach, fabric softener, dishwashing liquid and ammonia-based cleaners.
Authorities suspect the chemicals were mixed in 200-litre barrels before being poured into recycled containers bearing labels linked to global brands such as Unilever and Colgate-Palmolive.
Residents warn of potential health risks
Local residents say the illegal manufacturing activity has raised concerns about health hazards.
Some residents reported skin irritation after using suspected counterfeit cleaning products, while others said children in the area have experienced sinus problems due to chemical fumes.
Authorities have sent the seized products for forensic testing to determine whether they violate South Africa’s counterfeit goods laws.
