Eskom explores selling surplus power to bitcoin mining companies

South Africa’s state power utility Eskom is considering supplying excess electricity to Bitcoin mining companies as part of a new strategy to use unused daytime capacity.

Solar power changing electricity demand

According to Eskom chairman Mteto Nyati, electricity demand patterns are shifting as more households and businesses install rooftop solar systems.

Demand typically peaks in the early morning but drops significantly during the day when solar generation increases.

New revenue opportunities for Eskom

To use this excess electricity, Eskom is exploring the possibility of selling power to Bitcoin mining companies at lower prices during off-peak periods.

The plan is part of the utility’s broader strategy to adapt to a changing energy market and increasing competition from private energy producers.
