US ambassador warns South Africa as tensions rise despite billions in American investment

The United States has warned that its patience with South Africa is wearing thin, even as American companies continue to invest billions of rand in the country.

Major US investment in South Africa

More than 500 American companies operate in South Africa, employing over 250,000 people.

Major investments include Visa’s data centre in Johannesburg, Google Cloud’s African region, Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure expansion and Amazon’s AWS Skills Centre in Cape Town.

Five issues raised by Washington

The US ambassador outlined five concerns, including foreign policy alignment, business competition, property rights, ownership rules and rural safety.

He said these issues need to be addressed if the bilateral relationship is to remain strong.
