South Africa launches MEETS visa scheme to attract global events

South Africa has introduced a new visa reform initiative aimed at strengthening its position as a leading destination for international conferences, exhibitions and major events.

The Department of Home Affairs this week unveiled the Meetings, Exhibitions, Events and Tourism Scheme (MEETS), designed to simplify and accelerate visa processing for large groups travelling to the country.

Faster processing for large event groups

The new system is intended to address long-standing challenges associated with processing visas for large delegations, including performers, athletes, technical crews and conference delegates.

Historically, such applications have been slowed by fragmented administrative processes and tight deadlines. The MEETS initiative introduces a streamlined digital pathway tailored specifically for high-volume, time-sensitive applications.

Officials say the system will reduce administrative delays and improve turnaround times, ensuring that South Africa can respond more efficiently when selected as a host for global events.

Supporting economic growth and investment

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber described the launch as part of a broader effort to modernise the country’s immigration system and unlock economic opportunities.

He said the initiative aligns with government priorities to boost tourism, attract investment and create jobs.

The events industry, which includes conferences, trade exhibitions and sporting tournaments, is seen as a significant driver of economic activity. By simplifying entry requirements, authorities aim to attract more international gatherings to South Africa.

Application process for organisers

Under the scheme, local event organisers with a proven track record will be invited to apply to participate. Successful applicants will be required to meet specific criteria and enter into formal agreements with the Department of Home Affairs.

This framework is intended to ensure accountability while maintaining the integrity of the visa system.

Enhancing global competitiveness

South Africa already hosts a range of high-profile international events, from music festivals to mining conferences and academic forums. However, visa inefficiencies have often been cited as a barrier to further growth.

The introduction of MEETS is expected to address these concerns by making the visa process more predictable and responsive.

Officials believe that improving visa accessibility will enhance the country’s global appeal and help secure more international events in the future.
