South African law enforcement authorities have intensified efforts to combat drug-related crime, with recent operations in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape leading to multiple arrests and significant drug seizures.

Coordinated raids uncover illegal dagga shops in KZN

In KwaZulu-Natal, police dismantled four suspected cannabis distribution outlets during a coordinated operation across the eThekwini District. The operation was led by the Provincial Organised Crime Narcotics and Threat Unit following intelligence on a suspect allegedly running multiple dagga shops.

According to police spokesperson Paul Magwaza, search warrants were executed simultaneously at properties located in Umbilo, Amanzimtoti, Brighton Beach, and Montclair.

Authorities arrested five suspects, aged between 22 and 41, on charges of dealing in drugs. The primary suspect was apprehended at a separate location and later taken to his residence in Yellowpark, where additional cannabis was discovered.

Police estimated the total street value of the seized drugs at approximately R1.3 million, highlighting the scale of the operation.

Separate Cape Town incident leads to arrest after high-speed chase

In a separate incident in Cape Town, a motorist was arrested after a high-speed pursuit linked to suspected drug possession.

Members of the city’s traffic enforcement unit attempted to stop a white Hyundai i20 at a checkpoint in Khayelitsha after the vehicle failed to display a valid licence disc. The driver ignored instructions and fled the scene, triggering a chase.

The pursuit continued toward Mfuleni and Driftsands, where the suspect’s vehicle eventually came to a stop after sustaining mechanical damage.

A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered approximately 24.5 bags of cannabis. The 30-year-old driver was arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving, as well as possession of a large quantity of drugs.

Officials say these operations form part of broader efforts to curb illegal drug distribution networks and improve public safety. Law enforcement agencies have increasingly relied on intelligence-led operations to target suspected dealers and disrupt supply chains.

All suspects arrested in KwaZulu-Natal are expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court, while the Cape Town suspect will face charges in the Western Cape.

Authorities have indicated that further investigations are ongoing.
