South Africa police arrest nearly 17 000 suspects in nationwide Easter crackdown

South African police have arrested nearly 17 000 suspects in a sweeping nationwide crime operation conducted ahead of the Easter holiday period, as law enforcement intensifies efforts to curb violent and organised crime.

According to the South African Police Service, a total of 16 599 suspects were arrested between 23 and 29 March during the latest phase of Operation Shanela, a coordinated multi-province crackdown targeting serious and priority crimes.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mukhathi said the arrests include 2 026 wanted suspects linked to murder, attempted murder, rape, carjacking, illegal possession of firearms, aggravated assault and business robberies.

The operation comes as authorities step up security measures before the Easter travel rush, a period historically associated with increased movement across provinces and elevated crime risks.

Major busts across multiple provinces

Among the most notable arrests were five suspected female drug mules detained at OR Tambo International Airport.

Police said narcotics worth more than R5 million were found concealed in sneakers, underwear and body cavities.

The suspects were allegedly preparing to travel to China via Dubai.

In a separate multi-province operation spanning Cape Town, Matatiele and Nelspruit, seven suspects aged between 35 and 65 were arrested in connection with an alleged extortion syndicate targeting long-distance bus operators.

Authorities said the accused face 125 charges, including intimidation, extortion, money laundering and offences under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.

Shootouts, kidnappings and drug seizures

In Gauteng, four suspected armed robbers were shot dead in a police shootout in Yeoville, Johannesburg, while one suspect was wounded.

Police allege the group had been involved in multiple robberies targeting travellers arriving from the airport. Three unlicensed firearms were recovered.

In Limpopo, a 38-year-old suspect was arrested in a kidnapping and ransom case involving two men from Polokwane.

Police said the victims’ family was forced to pay a 70 000 rand ransom, and a firearm was later recovered during a house search.

KwaZulu-Natal also saw a deadly confrontation in Bellair, where four suspects linked to hijackings, murders and business robberies were fatally wounded in a shootout with police.

In Mpumalanga, 893kg of dagga valued at R5 million was seized from a Toyota Quantum, while in Worcester, Western Cape, officers intercepted methamphetamine worth R5.6 million.

The latest figures reflect an increasingly aggressive policing strategy as authorities seek to reassure the public amid ongoing concerns over violent crime and organised syndicates across the country.
