Police in Upington have launched an inquest investigation after the body of a 46-year-old woman was discovered inside a deep freezer at her residence in the Northern Cape.
The grim discovery was made on Tuesday afternoon, only hours after the woman had been reported missing by her husband.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Litabe, the case was officially registered at approximately 4:05pm on 31 March 2026.
Authorities confirmed that the deceased had first been reported missing earlier that morning at around 10am.
Following the missing persons report, police initiated a search operation that eventually led investigators back to the family home.
Body discovered inside storeroom freezer
Police said the woman’s body was found inside a deep freezer located in a storeroom on the property.
The fact that the body was discovered within the couple’s own residence has raised significant questions that investigators are now working to answer.
At this stage, authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the death or whether any persons of interest are being questioned.
All available evidence and witness statements are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.
Cause of death still unknown
Officials said the exact cause of death remains undetermined.
A post-mortem examination has been scheduled and will be central to establishing how and when the woman died.
Police have stressed that the case remains open and active pending forensic results.
