Rosebank emerges as a new hijacking hotspot amid Johannesburg property boom

Rosebank, one of Johannesburg’s most sought-after residential and commercial precincts, is increasingly being flagged as a new hijacking hotspot in South Africa, according to the latest crime data.

Figures released by the South African Police Service for the third quarter of 2025, covering October to December, recorded 4,778 carjacking cases nationwide — equivalent to around 50 incidents per day.

The data once again confirms that hijackings remain deeply entrenched across South Africa’s major urban centres.

Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape continue to report the highest number of cases, with Gauteng remaining the country’s primary hotspot.

Rosebank joins growing list of urban crime hotspots

While established areas such as Soweto, Johannesburg Central and Pinetown remain well-known hotspots, security firms are now raising concerns about Rosebank.

Traditionally associated with luxury apartments, corporate headquarters, restaurants and galleries, Rosebank has seen rapid residential expansion in recent years.

The suburb has become increasingly popular among younger professionals, semigrants, and investors seeking proximity to work and lifestyle amenities.

According to Lightstone, 74% of buyers in the precinct are under 50, with the 36–49 age group driving most transactions.

Property growth may be attracting criminal activity

Security analysts suggest that the suburb’s growing concentration of affluent residents and high-value vehicles may be contributing to increased targeting by criminal syndicates.

Fidelity Services Group CEO Wahl Bartmann said hijackings are expected to continue following a cyclical pattern through early 2026, with incidents likely rising again from March into April.

Meanwhile, Rosebank’s residential property market remains one of Johannesburg’s strongest performers.

Modern apartments priced between R1.5 million and R3 million continue to trade actively, while penthouses now exceed R12 million in some developments.

Property specialists say Rosebank continues to offer 30–40% better value than nearby Sandton while delivering similar lifestyle quality.

However, the suburb’s increasing profile as a residential and commercial hub may also be elevating security risks.
