Musk escalates Starlink South Africa row with bribery allegations

The long-running dispute over Starlink’s entry into South Africa intensified over the weekend after Elon Musk alleged that his company had been offered a way to “bribe” its way into the market.

According to Musk, Starlink was allegedly encouraged to present a Black front figure as the head of its South African entity in order to satisfy local licensing rules.

Government strongly rejects claims

South African officials have firmly denied the allegations, describing them as false and fabricated.

Clayson Monyela said all companies operating in South Africa are required to comply with the law and that no special treatment would be granted.

Regulatory backdrop

The dispute centres on South Africa’s B-BBEE framework, which requires certain levels of local ownership by historically disadvantaged groups in key industries, including telecommunications.

Starlink remains unavailable in South Africa and has recently also faced licensing setbacks in Namibia.
