Gauteng moves to cut surgery backlog of more than 30,000 patients

The Gauteng Department of Health has launched a major intervention programme to reduce a surgical backlog affecting more than 30,000 patients across public hospitals.

According to the department, approximately 30,600 patients are currently awaiting procedures, with the overwhelming majority classified as legacy cases built up over several years.

Digital system at the centre of reforms

A new case-level tracking platform, known as the TTG Dashboard, is being rolled out to provide real-time visibility into waiting lists and surgical throughput.

Officials say the platform will improve patient scheduling and hospital coordination.

More operating hours and staff

Hospitals are extending theatre hours into weekends and after-hours periods to run high-volume surgery drives.

Additional specialists are also being recruited as part of the backlog reduction strategy.

The latest figures mark an improvement from previous backlog peaks above 34,000 and 38,000 patients.
