Bafana Bafana face new controversy after alleged 12-player incident in Nicaragua friendly

South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, has become embroiled in another controversy ahead of the FIFA World Cup after claims emerged that the team may have briefly fielded 12 players during an international friendly against Nicaragua.

The allegation relates to South Africa’s goalless draw against Nicaragua at Orlando Amstel Arena last Friday, a match that was intended to form part of the team’s final preparations before travelling to Mexico for World Cup-related activities.

Questions surrounding the incident surfaced on Monday evening when former FIFA referee and SABC Sport analyst Victor Hlungwani highlighted what appeared to be an irregular substitution sequence during the second half of the match.

According to Hlungwani, television footage suggested that South Africa had 11 outfield players and one goalkeeper on the field at the same time following a series of substitutions made by head coach Hugo Broos.

“If you count the players carefully, there appear to be 12 South African players on the pitch,” Hlungwani said during the Soccerzone programme while analysing match footage.

Rules could place South Africa under scrutiny

Under Law 3 of the IFAB Laws of the Game, teams are permitted to have a maximum of 11 players on the field, including the goalkeeper.

Although administrative errors involving substitutions occasionally occur in football, incidents involving an extra player on the field can attract disciplinary attention if officials determine that competition rules were breached.

Should governing bodies conclude that South Africa violated match regulations, potential consequences could include the forfeiture of the match and a revised result in favour of Nicaragua. Financial sanctions against the South African Football Association (SAFA) are also possible, depending on the findings of any investigation.

At the time of publication, neither FIFA nor SAFA had announced a formal inquiry into the matter.

Another setback before the World Cup

The latest controversy follows a separate issue that affected the national team’s preparations only days earlier.

Bafana Bafana’s departure for Mexico was delayed after several members of the travelling delegation encountered visa-related difficulties. The situation resulted in assistant coach Helman Mkhalele and the team’s head of security being left behind when the squad eventually departed.

SAFA President Danny Jordaan later confirmed that the pair’s visa applications had been rejected. According to Jordaan, authorities did not provide a detailed explanation for the decision.

The back-to-back controversies have drawn attention away from the team’s on-field preparations at a critical stage before the World Cup.

Despite the distractions, head coach Hugo Broos and his squad remain focused on finalising preparations and building momentum ahead of the tournament.

Whether the alleged substitution error develops into a formal disciplinary matter remains to be seen, but the incident has already generated significant debate among football analysts and supporters across South Africa.
