BYD expands mall dealership network as it strengthens South African EV presence

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is expanding its retail footprint in South Africa by opening dealerships inside major shopping malls, reflecting a growing shift in how automakers engage with consumers as competition in the country’s new energy vehicle market intensifies.

The company has established several in-mall showrooms, including locations at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre in Pretoria and Cradlestone Mall in Krugersdorp. Additional dealership listings on BYD’s South African website show branches operating from Savannah Mall in Polokwane and Somerset Mall in Somerset West.

Unlike traditional vehicle dealerships located in commercial motor districts, the new outlets place BYD vehicles directly in high-traffic retail environments where shoppers can explore the brand during regular visits.

BYD’s South African lineup includes the Shark 6, Dolphin, Atto 3, Dolphin Surf and Sealion models, covering both battery electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

The company has described the new stores as spaces showcasing advanced technology, modern design and vehicles developed to suit local driving conditions.

South Africa’s EV market continues to evolve

The expansion comes as South Africa experiences steady growth in demand for electrified vehicles, although the segment still represents a relatively small share of the country’s overall automotive market.

Industry observers note that locating dealerships inside shopping centres mirrors a retail strategy popularised by Tesla, which moved away from conventional dealership lots by opening consumer-focused showrooms in premium malls. The concept allows potential buyers to browse vehicles in a relaxed retail setting before completing purchases through a streamlined sales process.

While BYD has not publicly confirmed whether more shopping-centre dealerships are planned, the company continues to increase its physical presence across the country.

Recent visits to BYD’s Cradlestone Mall showroom showed that customers can view the manufacturer’s complete South African product range under one roof, reinforcing the company’s focus on accessibility and brand visibility.

BYD dominates South Africa’s new energy vehicle sales

BYD’s retail expansion coincides with strong sales momentum.

According to figures reported to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), BYD has become the country’s leading seller of battery electric vehicles since it began reporting monthly sales in March2026.

Between March and May2026, BYD sold1,026 of the1,293 battery electric vehicles registered nationwide, giving the company close to an80% share of the EV market. Volvo ranked second with106 units, while Changan and Toyota each recorded38 sales during the same period.

The company has also maintained a leading position in South Africa’s plug-in hybrid segment. Of the2,887 PHEVs sold nationally between March and May2026, BYD accounted for985 units, representing roughly34% of total sales.

Other Chinese manufacturers—including Chery, Jetour, GWM and Omoda—also ranked among the country’s leading PHEV brands, highlighting the growing influence of Chinese automakers in South Africa’s transition toward new energy vehicles.

Although overall EV adoption remains at an early stage compared with more mature international markets, manufacturers continue to invest in local retail networks and customer engagement as infrastructure expands and consumer awareness increases.
