South Africa’s electric vehicle market has entered a new phase of price competition after Chinese automaker Geely Auto launched its latest all-electric hatchback, the E2, with a starting price of R339,900.
The launch positions the vehicle as one of the most affordable mainstream EVs currently available in the country and places direct pressure on competitors such as BYD in the compact electric segment.
The E2 is the third model introduced by Geely in South Africa and is among the first markets outside Asia to receive the vehicle.
In China, where the model is sold as the Geome Xingyuan, it became the country’s top-selling passenger car in 2025 with sales exceeding 465,000 units.
Affordable pricing targets growing urban EV demand
Geely said the new hatchback is aimed at urban commuters seeking affordable electric mobility without sacrificing technology and safety.
Both the Aspire and Apex variants are powered by a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 85kW and 150Nm of torque.
The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 11.5 seconds and is powered by a 39.4kWh LFP battery.
The official WLTP range is rated at up to 325km on a full charge.
Charging capabilities include DC fast charging of up to 70kW, allowing a 30% to 80% recharge in approximately 25 minutes.
Standard features include a 14.6-inch infotainment display, 8.8-inch digital cluster, wireless charging, six airbags, LED headlights, reverse camera and a 70-litre front trunk.
Direct challenge to BYD and rising EV competition
The launch intensifies competition in South Africa’s emerging budget EV market.
The E2 will compete directly with the BYD Dolphin Surf, which has been one of the country’s strongest-selling compact EVs.
However, Geely’s pricing and larger battery pack may provide a significant advantage.
While BYD’s entry-level model offers a smaller 30kWh battery, the Geely E2 delivers roughly 100km more range.
This comes at a time when rising fuel prices have increased consumer interest in electric mobility across South Africa.
Industry analysts say the arrival of lower-cost Chinese EV brands is expected to accelerate adoption in price-sensitive urban markets such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
Geely’s broader automotive portfolio — including Volvo Cars, Polestar and Zeekr — continues to strengthen its global position in the electric mobility sector.
