Hawks arrest suspected mastermind in Eastern Cape child kidnapping and extortion case

A major breakthrough has been made in a child kidnapping investigation that has gripped parts of the Eastern Cape for more than a year, with the Hawks arresting a suspect believed to be linked to the crime.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, confirmed that 48-year-old foreign national Eddie Ncube was arrested on 22 June 2026 following months of intelligence-led tracing operations.

Authorities allege that Ncube played a role in a child abduction and extortion scheme that began in February 2025 and later involved ransom demands.

Investigation followed abduction of nine-year-old child

The case stems from an incident that occurred on 4 February 2025 in Buffalo Flats, a community within KuGompo. According to investigators, two siblings were walking home from school during the afternoon when they were approached by individuals travelling in a silver-grey Toyota Corolla.

Police believe the suspects targeted the children before forcibly abducting one of them, a nine-year-old child, and fleeing the scene.

The incident triggered an immediate criminal investigation and a large-scale search effort involving multiple law enforcement units.

As detectives pursued leads, evidence allegedly emerged that the suspects had demanded a ransom, transforming the case into a kidnapping-for-extortion investigation.

Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said investigators spent several months gathering intelligence and tracking the movements of individuals believed to be involved.

The operation eventually led authorities to Ncube, who was located and arrested in KuGompo.

One suspect remains at large

While law enforcement officials have welcomed the arrest, the investigation is not yet complete.

According to the Hawks, at least one additional suspect linked to the case remains on the run. Authorities continue to pursue leads and have urged anyone with relevant information to cooperate with investigators.

Ncube has already appeared before the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court. The matter was postponed until 7 July 2026 to allow for a formal bail application.

He remains in custody pending the outcome of the bail proceedings.

The arrest comes amid broader efforts by South African law enforcement agencies to combat kidnapping syndicates and organised extortion networks.

In a separate operation in Gauteng this week, police arrested five suspected kidnappers during a coordinated sting operation. The arrests followed the reported kidnapping of a 47-year-old woman who disappeared while travelling to a gym in Edenvale on 17 June 2026.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the operation resulted in the successful rescue of two victims. Both sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment before being reunited with their families.

Kidnapping cases have become an increasing concern for law enforcement agencies in recent years, prompting authorities to expand intelligence-driven investigations and strengthen cooperation between specialised crime units.

Officials say efforts to dismantle kidnapping syndicates and recover victims safely remain a national policing priority.
