Police in KwaZulu-Natal have opened an investigation after a human head was discovered on Umdloti’s north beach on Sunday morning.
The shocking discovery was reportedly made shortly after 8am on Mother’s Day by a local fisherman walking along the shoreline.
According to Vicky Schnetler, the fisherman immediately alerted security personnel after identifying the remains.
Schnetler said the man stopped officers from Marshall Security at approximately 8:14am to report the incident.
Authorities were subsequently called to the scene.
Members of the South African Police Service removed the remains from the beach while investigations began into the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
Investigation underway after gruesome discovery
Police have not yet released details regarding the identity of the deceased or whether additional human remains may be involved.
Officials also have not confirmed whether foul play is suspected.
The area where the remains were discovered is part of Umdloti, a coastal town north of Durban known for its popular beaches and residential developments.
The incident caused concern among local residents and beachgoers, particularly as it occurred during a busy Mother’s Day weekend.
Authorities are expected to conduct forensic examinations as part of efforts to identify the victim and determine how the remains ended up on the shoreline.
No arrests have been reported at this stage.
