A fatal shooting at a busy café in Cape Town’s Table View area has sparked renewed concerns over violent crime in public spaces after a 33-year-old man was gunned down in broad daylight on Monday afternoon.
Police believe the attack may have been targeted rather than a random act of violence.
The incident occurred at a News Cafe near Marine Circle, a well-known beachfront commercial and entertainment area frequented by residents and tourists.
According to police, officers from Table View SAPS responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 14:00.
When authorities arrived, they found the victim lying face down with multiple gunshot wounds. Medical personnel declared him dead at the scene.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed that an investigation is underway, although no arrests had been made at the time of publication.
Witnesses describe rapid attack inside café
Local witnesses told media outlets that two unidentified gunmen allegedly entered the café and fired approximately six shots at the victim before fleeing.
The suspects reportedly took the man’s laptop and cellphone during the incident.
The victim is believed to have been a regular customer at the establishment.
Authorities said no other patrons, staff members, or bystanders were injured during the shooting, despite the café being occupied at the time.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and police have not yet confirmed whether robbery was the primary motive or whether the theft of personal items occurred after a targeted assassination.
The shooting has shocked members of the local community due to the location and timing of the attack, which unfolded during the afternoon in one of Table View’s busiest public areas.
Marine Circle and the surrounding beachfront precinct are popular destinations known for restaurants, cafés, and oceanfront tourism activities.
Business group seeks to calm safety concerns
Following the incident, the Beach Boulevard Business Precinct released a statement aimed at reassuring residents, visitors, and business owners.
The organisation said early information suggested the shooting was an isolated incident rather than a broader threat to public safety.
“At this stage, there is no indication of any ongoing threat to residents, visitors or businesses within the area, and the precinct remains safe,” the statement said.
The group also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims on social media while police investigations continue.
The latest incident comes shortly after South African authorities released updated national crime statistics showing a decline in murders during the first quarter of 2026.
According to the figures, the country’s murder rate dropped to an average of 58 killings per day between January and March.
However, the Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and Eastern Cape continue to account for more than 80% of all murders nationwide.
Cape Town and surrounding areas in the Western Cape have long struggled with violent crime, including gang-related shootings and targeted killings.
Although police statistics show some overall improvement, incidents involving firearms in public venues continue to raise concern among residents and businesses alike.
Investigators are expected to review CCTV footage and witness statements as part of the ongoing probe into Monday’s shooting.
