Mpumalanga police seize dagga worth more than R1 million during roadside operation

South African police have intensified efforts against drug trafficking after officers in Mpumalanga intercepted a vehicle carrying a large quantity of dagga valued at more than R1 million.

The seizure was made during a routine stop-and-search operation conducted along the R38 Road, where officers stopped a white Nissan GD-6 single-cab bakkie and carried out a detailed inspection.

According to police, the operation resulted in the discovery of 13 bags of dagga concealed inside the vehicle.

The confiscated consignment weighed approximately 170.6 kilograms and is estimated to have a street value exceeding R1 million.

A 36-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with dealing in dagga. Authorities also seized all evidence found during the operation in accordance with South African Police Service procedures.

Suspect Expected to Appear in Court

Police confirmed that the accused is expected to appear before the Barberton Magistrate’s Court to face charges related to drug dealing.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the transportation of the drugs and whether the suspect may be linked to a broader trafficking network.

Acting Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi praised officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and commitment.

He said law enforcement agencies remain determined to disrupt illegal drug distribution channels throughout the province.

Authorities believe continued roadside operations and intelligence-driven policing remain key tools in combating narcotics-related crime and preventing harmful substances from reaching communities.

Limpopo Operation Leads to Additional Drug Seizure

In a separate operation conducted in Limpopo, police working alongside Farm Watch members recovered dagga with an estimated street value of R3 million and arrested six suspects.

The intelligence-led operation took place on the R531 Road between Klaserie and Snake Park near Hoedspruit.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, officers acted on information regarding the transportation of illicit substances and intercepted three vehicles travelling towards Tzaneen.

A search of the vehicles uncovered fourteen large bags and twenty smaller bags containing dagga.

Police also confiscated three vehicles allegedly used to transport the drugs, with investigations continuing into possible links to organised trafficking activities.

The two operations highlight ongoing efforts by South African law enforcement agencies to target drug trafficking routes and dismantle criminal networks involved in the illegal narcotics trade.

Authorities have indicated that similar operations will continue across multiple provinces as part of broader strategies aimed at reducing drug-related crime and protecting communities.
