South Africa’s National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced a nationwide recall of Slimsy Pomegranate Squash Concentrate, warning consumers of potential health and safety risks linked to defective packaging.
The recall affects the 6% Slimsy concentrate sold in one-litre bottles, with a best-before date of 14 October 2026. The product was distributed between 22 January and 23 March 2026 across multiple provinces, including Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal.
packaging defect raises safety risks
According to the NCC, the recall was triggered by reports of bottles appearing swollen or bloated, suggesting the possible build-up of gas inside the packaging.
Such defects may increase internal pressure, raising the risk of bottles rupturing and potentially causing physical injury to consumers.
In addition to the physical hazard, officials have also raised concerns about food safety, warning that the affected product could lead to foodborne illness if consumed.
consumers urged to act immediately
Consumers who have purchased the affected product are strongly advised not to consume it. Instead, they should return it to the retailer where it was purchased to receive a full refund.
Retailers nationwide have been instructed to remove all implicated stock from shelves without delay as part of the recall process.
The NCC said it will continue to monitor the recall closely to ensure compliance with the Consumer Protection Act, reinforcing its mandate to protect consumer health and safety.
Product recalls have become an increasingly important mechanism in South Africa’s consumer protection framework, highlighting the role of regulatory oversight in preventing potential harm.
