Police uncover R3 million drug stash at Kuils River guesthouse, two suspects arrested

A major anti-drug operation in the Western Cape has resulted in the arrest of two suspects after police allegedly discovered a large quantity of narcotics worth an estimated R3 million at a guesthouse in Kuils River.

The suspects, a 29-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man, are expected to appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges related to the possession and distribution of illegal drugs.

The arrests followed intelligence received by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) during the early hours of Monday morning. Information suggested that drug-related activities were taking place at a bed-and-breakfast establishment in the Langverwacht area.

Acting on the tip-off, officers conducted an operation at the identified property and located two individuals matching information contained in the intelligence report.

While investigating the premises, police noticed a white Volkswagen Polo parked outside the room occupied by the suspects.

According to SAPS, officers observed a large black bag positioned on the vehicle’s back seat through the window. The discovery prompted further investigation.

After requesting access to the vehicle, police conducted a search and reportedly uncovered a substantial quantity of illegal substances hidden inside.

Authorities initially found a large number of Mandrax tablets before expanding the search to additional bags located in and around the vehicle.

Large quantities of Mandrax and methamphetamine seized

Further inspection led to the recovery of 51 bags containing Mandrax tablets, one of the most commonly trafficked illicit drugs in South Africa.

Police also seized five kilograms of methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth, a drug that has been linked to addiction, gang activity and organised crime networks in several parts of the country.

The total street value of the confiscated narcotics has been estimated at approximately R3 million.

In addition to the drugs, officers recovered R17,000 in cash. Investigators believe the money may be linked to criminal activities and have seized it as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Western Cape has long been a focal point in South Africa’s fight against drug trafficking, with law-enforcement agencies regularly targeting distribution networks operating in urban centres and surrounding communities.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that the illegal drug trade contributes to violent crime, gang-related activity and social instability across the province.

Both suspects remain in custody and are expected to face charges relating to the possession of and dealing in illegal drugs when they appear before court.

Police have indicated that investigations remain ongoing and that additional arrests could follow if further links to wider drug distribution networks are uncovered.
