South Africa’s renowned minting authority has introduced an ambitious new collector coin series that combines wildlife artistry, precious metals and investment appeal.
The South African Mint has officially unveiled the African Range, a premium collection of gold and silver proof coins inspired by Africa’s iconic wildlife. The debut release focuses on the cheetah and includes some of the most valuable collector coins ever offered by the institution.
While each coin carries an official face value, their actual worth is determined primarily by the precious metals they contain and their limited availability. The flagship one-kilogram gold edition is currently valued at approximately R3.7 million based on prevailing gold prices, placing it among the most exclusive offerings in the local collectibles market.
Wildlife storytelling meets world-class artistry
The African Range begins with a five-coin cheetah collection designed around a unique narrative concept.
Rather than depicting a single wildlife image, the series tells the story of a hunt through five stages. The sequence starts with the cheetah surveying its surroundings, progresses through stealth and pursuit, and concludes with the successful capture of prey followed by a moment of rest.
Each design is based on original wildlife sculptures created by internationally recognised South African artist Dylan Lewis. Lewis is widely known for his large-scale wildlife sculptures and has exhibited his work in major international cities including London, Paris and New York.
According to the South African Mint, translating these detailed three-dimensional artworks into coin form required advanced engraving techniques to preserve texture, depth and visual impact.
The collection is available in a variety of formats, including one-ounce, two-ounce, five-ounce and ten-ounce gold and silver proof coins. Limited-edition one-kilogram versions in both gold and silver are also being released for serious collectors and investors.
Building a new flagship collection for South Africa
The launch comes at a time when interest in precious metal collectibles remains strong both locally and internationally.
South Africa has long been recognised as one of the world’s leading gold-producing nations and has built a global reputation through products such as the Krugerrand, one of the most widely traded bullion coins ever produced.
More recently, wildlife-themed collections including the Big Five series have attracted significant interest from collectors seeking products that combine artistic value with precious metal exposure.
Richard Stone of the South African Mint described the African Range as one of the organisation’s most significant product launches in decades.
“Our ambition was to create a flagship collection that reflects Africa’s natural beauty, craftsmanship and artistic excellence,” Stone said.
Industry observers note that the appeal of high-end collector coins extends beyond their precious metal content. Scarcity, artistic design, historical significance and collector demand can all contribute to long-term value appreciation.
The African Range aims to build on South Africa’s strong reputation in the numismatic sector while showcasing the continent’s wildlife heritage to a global audience.
With gold prices remaining elevated and demand for limited-edition collectibles continuing to grow, the new series could become one of the country’s most sought-after coin collections in the years ahead.
