Sixteen suspects arrested after R900,000 robbery at Goldfields Mall in Free State

A coordinated operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) and private security companies has resulted in the arrest of 16 suspects following a violent armed robbery at Goldfields Mall in Welkom, Free State.

Police recovered luxury merchandise valued at nearly R900,000 only hours after two clothing stores were targeted during the robbery on Wednesday evening.

According to investigators, the suspects stormed two retail outlets at approximately 7:45pm before fleeing with expensive clothing, designer watches and perfumes. The stolen goods were loaded into several getaway vehicles as the group attempted to escape across provincial borders.

Private security officers were first to respond and immediately launched a pursuit after the suspects left the shopping centre.

Multi-Agency Chase Leads To Multiple Arrests

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said the fleeing suspects split into several vehicles during the escape, prompting a high-speed chase involving both private security officers and specialised police units.

An exchange of gunfire occurred during the pursuit, although authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were reported.

SAPS quickly deployed the Welkom Public Order Police (POP), the Welkom K9 Unit and the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit to assist with the operation.

The first group of suspects was intercepted between Welkom and Odendaalsrus, where four arrests were made. Officers also recovered a substantial portion of the stolen merchandise and seized two vehicles—a white Kia Sportage and a white Nissan NP300 bakkie—both loaded with goods allegedly taken during the robbery.

Investigators continued following intelligence gathered at the scene, which indicated that additional suspects had fled into neighbouring provinces.

Firearms And Stolen Goods Recovered

Acting on fresh intelligence, SAPS members in Orkney and Stilfontein intercepted a white Toyota Quantum minibus and arrested nine more suspects.

Inside the vehicle, officers recovered four handguns together with matching ammunition. Police said ballistic examinations will determine whether the firearms were used in previous criminal incidents.

The final phase of the operation unfolded in Villiers, where officers stopped a blue Hyundai i20 and arrested the remaining three suspects. The vehicle was also confiscated as part of the investigation.

In total, 16 men aged between 20 and 44 are now in police custody.

They are expected to face charges including business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property when they appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court.

Police described the operation as another example of the value of intelligence-led policing and close cooperation between SAPS tactical units and private security companies in disrupting organised criminal networks operating across provincial boundaries.

Investigations remain ongoing to establish whether the suspects may be linked to other armed robberies committed elsewhere in South Africa.
