South Africa has strongly condemned the interception of the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), describing the reported detention of South African citizens in international waters as a serious violation of international law and human rights.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) issued the statement after Israeli forces reportedly intercepted the civilian-led humanitarian vessel on Monday, 18 May, while it was attempting to deliver aid to Palestinians in Gaza.
Among those aboard the flotilla was South African humanitarian ambassador Faizel Moosa, who was reportedly detained following the interception.
The Global Sumud Flotilla forms part of a wider international activist campaign seeking to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by the ongoing conflict in the territory.
The latest incident follows previous attempts by activist groups to reach Gaza by sea, including another convoy intercepted by Israeli authorities last month.
Pretoria raises legal and diplomatic concerns
Dirco said the South African government viewed reports surrounding the interception with “grave concern,” particularly allegations that South African nationals were detained in international waters and could face imprisonment in Israel.
According to the department, the flotilla was operating as a peaceful humanitarian initiative intended to highlight the worsening humanitarian conditions facing Palestinians in Gaza.
“It must be underscored that the Flotilla, a civilian-led initiative, embarked upon a peaceful and humanitarian mission,” Dirco said.
“Its participants aim to draw attention to the severe and urgent humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people in Gaza and to deliver vital aid to alleviate the widespread suffering of a people living under occupation and genocide.”
The department added that the incident raises serious humanitarian, legal, and diplomatic concerns that require urgent international attention.
South Africa has consistently maintained a strong position in support of Palestinian rights and has repeatedly called for adherence to international humanitarian law throughout the Gaza conflict.
Pretoria has also been one of the most vocal governments globally in criticising Israeli military actions in Gaza.
Calls for immediate release and safe passage
Dirco urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and respect international law while ensuring the safety and dignity of those aboard the vessel.
“The safety, security and physical integrity of all unarmed participants aboard the Flotilla, including South African citizens, are of paramount importance,” the department stated.
“Any forceful detention of these vessels in international waters constitutes a grave breach of international legal norms and fundamental human rights.”
The South African government said it is engaging with relevant international organisations and stakeholders linked to the flotilla in efforts to secure the immediate and safe release of those detained.
Officials also said they are working to ensure that affected families remain informed as the situation develops.
The incident is expected to add further diplomatic tension to an already highly sensitive international dispute surrounding humanitarian access to Gaza.
Dirco further called on the international community to uphold international legal obligations and guarantee the safe and uninterrupted passage of humanitarian missions operating in conflict zones.
