South Africa fuel price increase April 2026: petrol up R1.76, diesel may jump R3.30

South African motorists could face a steep fuel price increase in April 2026, as early review data signals significant hikes in both petrol and diesel.

According to preliminary figures from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), 95 unleaded petrol is currently tracking a potential increase of around R1.76 per litre, while 93 unleaded may rise by R1.69. Diesel drivers may see an even sharper adjustment, with 50ppm diesel pointing to a possible R3.30 per litre wholesale jump if trends hold.

Brent crude surge drives price pressure

Fuel prices in South Africa are adjusted on the first Wednesday of each month, based on a four- to five-week review period reflecting international petroleum prices and the rand-dollar exchange rate.

The latest projected increase follows a sharp surge in Brent crude oil prices, triggered by escalating geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

Market attention has centred on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy shipping route that carries roughly 20% of the world’s oil and gas supply. While the waterway remains open, threats against vessels have reduced shipping activity, raising supply concerns.

Brent crude has climbed from approximately $71 per barrel in late February to above $83 in early March — the highest level since mid-2024.

Rand weakness adds further strain

The strengthening US dollar has added further pressure. Since South Africa imports most of its refined fuel products and transactions are denominated in dollars, a weaker rand increases domestic costs.

Higher fuel prices could contribute to inflationary pressure, affecting transport, food and manufacturing costs. Financial markets are closely watching whether sustained energy price increases could influence interest rate expectations.

Analysts caution that the review period is still ongoing and oil markets remain volatile. Any easing in geopolitical tensions could reduce the projected increase before the official April adjustment is confirmed.

The final fuel price changes will be announced closer to implementation by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.
