South African woman arrested at OR Tambo Airport in suspected international drug smuggling case

A 23-year-old South African woman has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after police allegedly discovered suspected drug-filled capsules concealed inside her body before she boarded an international flight.

The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to disrupt international drug trafficking networks operating through the country’s busiest airport.

Authorities say the suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on charges related to drug dealing.

Border Police Act On Intelligence

According to SAPS, Border Police officers intercepted the woman on Friday after receiving operational intelligence indicating a possible drug trafficking attempt.

She was escorted for a medical examination, where X-ray scans allegedly revealed multiple capsules suspected of containing narcotics concealed internally.

Investigators believe the suspect had travelled on a domestic route before returning to OR Tambo International Airport to connect to an international flight.

Police intercepted her shortly before she was due to board a direct flight to Tokyo, preventing her departure from South Africa.

SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mukhathi said that, under medical supervision, the suspect had released 28 suspected drug-filled capsules by the time authorities announced the arrest.

The recovery process remains ongoing under strict medical observation to ensure the suspect’s safety while preserving potential evidence.

Forensic Testing And Court Appearance To Follow

Police confirmed that every recovered capsule has been entered into the SAPS exhibit management system and will undergo forensic testing.

Laboratory analysis will determine the exact type of narcotics involved and estimate their potential street value.

The woman remains in police custody and is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court to face charges of dealing in drugs.

The latest arrest is part of SAPS’ broader campaign to combat transnational organised crime and disrupt international drug trafficking routes through South Africa.

OR Tambo International Airport continues to be one of the country’s primary targets for anti-smuggling operations because of its role as South Africa’s busiest international gateway.

Law enforcement agencies have increased intelligence-driven operations, passenger screening and cooperation with international partners in recent years as criminal syndicates continue attempting to move narcotics through commercial air travel.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that drug mules recruited by organised crime groups face serious criminal charges, lengthy prison sentences and significant health risks associated with transporting narcotics inside their bodies.

Police said investigations into the latest case remain ongoing.
