South Africa’s top-paying graduate jobs revealed as engineering and tech dominate hiring market

Despite persistently high youth unemployment in South Africa, newly qualified graduates continue to find strong earning opportunities in several sectors, particularly engineering, information technology and finance.

Recent data from the Pnet Job Market Trends Report for June 2026 shows that graduates entering technical professions can earn significantly higher salaries than those starting careers in many traditional fields. Entry-level salaries range from around R6,200 per month for diploma holders to more than R24,500 for university graduates in specialised occupations.

Electrical engineering emerged as the most lucrative career path for new graduates. Employers are offering salaries of between R11,682 and R24,545 per month for junior electrical engineers and graduate engineering positions.

Software development ranks closely behind, reflecting South Africa’s growing demand for digital skills as businesses continue investing in technology, automation and cybersecurity solutions. Entry-level software engineers and full-stack developers can expect monthly earnings ranging from R12,508 to R23,488.

Technical skills continue to command premium salaries

The strong performance of engineering and IT careers mirrors a broader trend that has developed over the past decade. South Africa’s infrastructure requirements, energy challenges and digital transformation initiatives have increased demand for highly skilled technical professionals.

Beyond software development, systems and network administration remains another attractive field. Junior IT administrators and hardware support specialists can earn between R10,690 and R14,750 per month at the start of their careers.

The finance sector also provides competitive opportunities for graduates. Junior accounting clerks, assistant bookkeepers and bookkeeping professionals can earn salaries ranging from R9,375 to R18,357 monthly.

Graduate financial accountants, including trainee accountants and SAIPA or SAICA clerks, typically earn between R9,395 and R13,815 per month while building professional experience and qualifications.

Although technical fields dominate salary rankings, several other sectors continue to provide important entry points into the labour market.

Marketing graduates holding diplomas can secure positions such as marketing assistants and sales and marketing interns, with salaries ranging from R8,900 to R12,120 per month.

Meanwhile, graduates entering recruitment and talent acquisition roles can expect earnings of between R8,100 and R12,020 monthly, depending on experience and employer size.

Human resources remains one of the most accessible pathways for diploma holders. HR interns and administrators typically earn between R6,200 and R8,083 per month while gaining valuable corporate experience.

University rankings highlight South Africa’s education strengths

The employment data comes as South African universities continue strengthening their international standing.

According to the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, 13 South African universities were included among the world’s leading higher education institutions.

The rankings assessed more than 2,100 universities across 108 countries and territories using indicators covering teaching quality, research output, industry collaboration and international engagement.

The University of Cape Town retained its position as South Africa’s highest-ranked university, improving from 180th place in 2025 to 164th globally in 2026.

Stellenbosch University remained in the 301–350 category for a third consecutive year, while the University of Pretoria improved its position by moving into the 501–600 range.

The University of the Witwatersrand dropped from the 201–300 grouping to the 301–350 category, highlighting the increasingly competitive nature of global university rankings.

For many South Africans, studying at local universities continues to offer one of the most affordable routes to internationally recognised qualifications. Combined with strong demand for technical graduates, higher education remains a key pathway to securing stable employment and higher earning potential.
