Three suspects have been arrested following an intelligence-led police operation that uncovered more than R1 million worth of rock cocaine at a holiday apartment in KwaZulu-Natal, as authorities continue their crackdown on organised drug trafficking across South Africa.
The operation took place on Tuesday, 28 July, in Kingsburgh near Amanzimtoti, where members of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Drugs and Firearms Unit acted on intelligence indicating that a group of suspects was allegedly using a rented apartment to process, package and distribute rock cocaine.
Police said officers first confirmed the exact location of the suspects before carrying out a tactical raid on the property. After identifying themselves, officers entered the apartment and allegedly found the suspects actively packaging narcotics.
One of the suspects attempted to escape during the operation but was quickly apprehended before leaving the premises.
Officers subsequently searched the apartment and recovered rock cocaine with an estimated street value exceeding R1 million. Investigators also seized two sealing machines and a digital scale believed to have been used in the packaging and distribution of the drugs.
The three suspects have been charged with dealing in drugs and are scheduled to appear before the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 29 July.
Police Continue Intelligence-Led Crackdown On Drug Networks
According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Paul Magwaza, the successful operation highlights the importance of intelligence gathering in disrupting organised criminal activity.
The Provincial Drugs and Firearms Unit has increasingly relied on intelligence-led investigations to identify suspected drug distribution points, many of which operate from rented residential properties or temporary accommodation to avoid detection.
Police have not yet released the identities or nationalities of the three suspects, while investigations continue to determine whether the operation is linked to a larger criminal network operating within the province.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to targeting every stage of the drug supply chain, from manufacturing and packaging to distribution and street-level dealing.
Recent Drug Lab Case Highlights Wider Fight Against Organised Crime
The latest arrests come only days after another significant victory for law enforcement involving a suspected drug manufacturing operation in Gauteng.
Last week, South African authorities secured a court-ordered preservation of a property and cash linked to a clandestine drug laboratory valued at approximately R100 million in Rietfontein.
The preservation order was granted by the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Pretoria under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA), allowing authorities to preserve assets believed to have been used in criminal activity.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said the order followed a major operation carried out in November 2024, during which investigators uncovered the large-scale illicit drug laboratory and arrested a Mexican national at the scene.
South African Police Service officials say intelligence-driven investigations and cooperation between specialised units remain central to ongoing efforts to dismantle organised drug syndicates operating across the country.
