Three suspected Rolex gang members killed during intelligence-led police operation in Gauteng

Three suspected members of the notorious Rolex gang were killed and another suspect was arrested after an intelligence-driven police operation escalated into a high-speed pursuit and deadly shootout near Johannesburg on Thursday.

The confrontation unfolded at the Buccleuch Interchange along the N3 highway after Gauteng police tracked vehicles believed to be linked to a robbery syndicate known for targeting owners of luxury watches and jewellery.

According to Gauteng police, intelligence officers had identified a group of suspects travelling in three separate vehicles while allegedly scouting shopping malls for potential victims.

Members of the Gauteng Tactical Response Team (TRT) located one of the identified vehicles on the N3 and attempted to stop it. Instead of complying, the driver fled at high speed, triggering a pursuit that quickly developed into an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and police.

Multi-Agency Operation Ends In Fatal Shootout

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said several specialised units joined the operation, including the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, the Gauteng Traffic Airwing and private security companies.

The suspect vehicle eventually came to a stop at the Buccleuch Interchange, where three occupants were declared dead at the scene.

Investigators recovered two pistols from inside the vehicle as forensic teams began processing the crime scene.

While officers were still conducting investigations at the location, a second vehicle identified during the intelligence operation was spotted travelling nearby.

Police stopped the vehicle and arrested its sole occupant, who is expected to face a charge of conspiracy to commit robbery.

Authorities said investigations remain ongoing to determine whether additional suspects connected to the operation remain at large.

Rolex Gang Remains A Priority Target

Police described the operation as another example of successful cooperation between specialised law enforcement units and private security partners in combating organised crime across Gauteng.

The Rolex gang has become one of South Africa’s most notorious robbery syndicates, with members allegedly targeting individuals wearing expensive watches, jewellery and carrying high-value electronic devices.

The group typically identifies potential victims at shopping malls, luxury retail districts and airports before following them to their homes or secure parking facilities, where armed robberies are carried out within minutes. Some incidents have involved vehicle hijackings and the use of firearms.

Investigators believe the syndicate has operated extensively in affluent areas including Bryanston, Sandton, Rosebank and Menlyn, making it a long-standing focus of police intelligence operations.

Authorities have not ruled out additional arrests as the investigation continues into the broader network believed to be involved in organised robbery activities across Gauteng.
