Two young adults killed after vehicle plunges into Crocodile River near Mbombela

A tragic road accident claimed the lives of two young people after a vehicle left the roadway and plunged into the Crocodile River near Mbombela in Mpumalanga on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene after reports emerged that a white vehicle had veered off the road near the intersection connecting the University of Mpumalanga and KaMagugu before entering the river.

Police and search-and-rescue teams immediately launched an operation to locate the vehicle and assess the situation.

Recovery operation complicated by submerged vehicle

According to Mpumalanga police, rescuers located the vehicle completely submerged beneath the water with two occupants trapped inside.

The recovery operation proved particularly challenging because the Crocodile River is known for its crocodile population and strong river conditions, creating additional risks for emergency personnel working at the scene.

After an extensive search and recovery effort, emergency teams successfully retrieved the vehicle and recovered the bodies of both occupants.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Jabu Ndumane confirmed that the victims were a 20-year-old man and a young woman believed to be between 20 and 22 years old.

Authorities said the vehicle carried Mpumalanga registration plates and had become fully submerged shortly after entering the river.

The accident has shocked the local community, particularly because of the young age of the victims.

Investigation underway into cause of crash

Police have stated that there is currently no indication of foul play.

Investigators are instead focusing on the circumstances that may have contributed to the vehicle leaving the road.

Among the factors being examined are vehicle speed, visibility conditions, road design and the possibility of driver error. Authorities are also seeking to determine why control of the vehicle was lost near the intersection.

According to preliminary findings, the vehicle travelled approximately 500 metres after leaving the roadway before ultimately entering the river.

Investigators are reconstructing the sequence of events leading up to the crash and have not ruled out any potential contributing factors at this stage.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been publicly released as police continue the process of notifying their next of kin.

Road safety experts have frequently warned motorists to exercise caution when travelling on routes near rivers and water crossings, particularly during periods of poor visibility or adverse weather conditions.

Police said the investigation remains active and further information will be released once the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash have been fully established.
