US ends routine visa services in Durban as South Africa joins regional processing system

South Africans applying for United States visas will no longer be able to complete routine visa applications in Durban after the US Department of State announced a major restructuring of its visa operations across Africa.

From 1 August 2026, applicants who would previously have used the US Consulate in Durban for routine visa services will instead be required to schedule appointments at designated regional processing hubs in Johannesburg or Cape Town.

According to the US Department of State, the change forms part of a broader initiative to centralise visa processing across Africa in an effort to strengthen national security, standardise screening procedures and improve operational efficiency.

Officials said the regional hub model has already been introduced successfully in several African countries as well as parts of Europe, delivering more consistent visa adjudication while making better use of diplomatic resources.

Routine Visa Services Continue Despite Processing Changes

The US Embassy in South Africa stressed that the restructuring does not represent the closure of embassies or consulates, nor does it reduce the range of consular services available to American citizens overseas.

Instead, the changes affect only where routine visa applications are processed.

Both immigrant and non-immigrant visa categories will continue to be available, including tourist, business, employment and petition-based visas.

The regional processing system will also handle immediate relative (IR), family preference (FP), employment-based (EB), fiancé(e) (K), adoption, Diversity Visa and follow-to-join refugee and asylum (V92/V93) applications.

Applicants requiring immigration medical examinations may continue using approved panel physicians in their own country where available. If no authorised physician is available locally, medical examinations will be completed at the designated regional processing hub.

Applicants submitting visa applications on or after 1 August 2026 must schedule appointments and pay visa fees through the appropriate regional visa centre.

Security And Efficiency Drive New Visa Model

The Department of State said the reorganisation is part of an ongoing review of overseas diplomatic operations to ensure resources are aligned with America’s national interests.

The department said maintaining consistent security screening, background checks and visa adjudication standards remains a key priority while improving operational efficiency across its global network.

The US Embassy added that existing visa restrictions introduced under Presidential Proclamation 10998, visa bond requirements and temporary suspensions affecting certain immigrant visa categories will remain in force.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, the embassy said President Donald Trump is prioritising stronger national security, reducing government spending and ensuring government resources serve the interests of the American people.

For South Africans living in KwaZulu-Natal, particularly those in Durban and surrounding areas, the changes mean future visa applicants will need to travel to either Johannesburg or Cape Town for routine interviews and processing, potentially increasing travel costs and planning requirements.

The Department of State said it will continue reviewing its international operations to balance security, efficiency and customer service while maintaining full consular assistance for American citizens abroad.
