Vodacom has announced a major partnership with Amazon that will provide eligible mobile and broadband customers in South Africa with complimentary Amazon Prime memberships, expanding the telecommunications company’s digital lifestyle offering beyond traditional connectivity.
The agreement gives selected postpaid subscribers access to Amazon Prime benefits at no additional cost, while prepaid customers will be able to subscribe using their airtime balance.
The partnership comes only weeks after Amazon officially launched Prime in South Africa, marking another step in the company’s expansion across the local digital services market.
Different Vodacom Plans Receive Different Prime Benefits
Under the new agreement, customers on Vodacom’s RED Flexi, RED Core and RED VIP plans will receive varying levels of Amazon Prime access.
RED Flexi subscribers will qualify for a free three-month membership, while RED Core customers will receive 12 months of complimentary access.
Customers on RED VIP, Home Internet and Fibre packages will receive Amazon Prime for as long as they remain eligible and the service continues to be available.
Vodacom also confirmed that Home Internet, Mobile Broadband and Fibre customers will begin accessing the Prime benefit from August 2026.
Meanwhile, prepaid customers who are not eligible for complimentary memberships can still subscribe to Amazon Prime and pay directly using their Vodacom airtime.
Partnership Expands Vodacom’s Digital Ecosystem
Amazon Prime launched in South Africa on 3 June 2026, costing R59 per month or R399 annually. The yearly subscription effectively reduces the monthly cost to R33.25, making it one of Amazon’s most affordable Prime offerings worldwide.
The membership combines several services into one subscription, including Prime Video streaming, free same-day and next-day delivery on eligible products, Prime Gaming benefits, exclusive Prime Day shopping events and early access to selected promotions.
The launch also replaces the previous standalone Prime Video subscription, which cost R79 per month, allowing existing streaming subscribers to access additional shopping and entertainment benefits at a lower monthly price.
Vodacom’s Director of Consumer Business, Rishaad Tayob, said the partnership supports the company’s strategy of becoming a comprehensive digital lifestyle provider rather than simply a mobile network operator.
He noted that consumers continue to seek greater value as household budgets remain under pressure from the rising cost of living.
Amazon Sub-Saharan Africa Managing Director Robert Koen said the collaboration reflects Amazon’s long-term commitment to the South African market.
Since launching its online marketplace in South Africa two years ago, Amazon has continued expanding its product selection, delivery network and digital services.
Vodacom Fintech Group and Group Partnerships CEO Mariam Cassim added that strategic partnerships with leading global brands allow the company to deliver additional value beyond connectivity, giving customers access to internationally recognised digital products and services through a single provider.
