Walmart charts nationwide expansion with 21 new stores planned

Growth strategy targets Gauteng, KZN and Western Cape

Walmart has unveiled plans to significantly expand its footprint in South Africa, confirming that 21 additional stores are in the pipeline as it accelerates its national rollout.

The announcement follows the opening of the retailer’s third fully branded South African outlet at Eastpoint Shopping Centre in Boksburg, scheduled for 28 February 2026. The store, which will open at 08:00 with launch promotions and family-focused activities, replaces a former Game outlet that closed in mid-2025.

According to the company, the Boksburg launch marks the beginning of a broader expansion drive aimed at strengthening its presence in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape — three provinces that represent key consumer markets in the country.

“Walmart is firmly establishing a broader national presence to deliver affordable, high-quality merchandise to South African consumers,” the retailer said in a statement.

Rollout coincides with restructuring of Game portfolio

The expansion comes at a pivotal time for Walmart’s local subsidiary, Massmart. The group recently confirmed it is considering the closure of approximately 20 Game stores as part of a portfolio review. Reports from employees suggested that as many as 21 outlets could be affected, with some potentially being converted into Walmart-branded stores.

In KwaZulu-Natal, locations such as Amanzimtoti, Ballito, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg and The Pavilion are among those expected to face changes. However, Massmart has emphasised that the proposed closures represent only a fraction of its 122 Game stores nationwide and that there are no plans to shut down the chain entirely.

Walmart first entered the South African market in 2010 through the acquisition of a majority stake in Massmart, completing a full buyout in 2022 and subsequently delisting the company from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. For more than a decade, the group operated primarily through established local brands.

The shift toward opening fully branded Walmart stores began in late 2025, with the launch of outlets at Clearwater Mall and Fourways Mall in Johannesburg. These openings signalled a new strategy aimed at introducing the retailer’s global operating model directly to South African shoppers.

Historically, South Africa’s retail sector has been dominated by domestic chains with extensive store networks and strong brand loyalty. Walmart’s current expansion suggests confidence that its scale-driven procurement model and focus on competitive pricing can secure a larger share of the market.

Industry observers note that converting underperforming Game locations into Walmart stores could allow the group to leverage existing infrastructure while refreshing its brand identity. This approach may also reduce capital expenditure compared to building entirely new sites.

With 21 additional stores under consideration, Walmart’s expansion represents one of the most significant retail growth initiatives in South Africa in recent years. The coming months are expected to clarify which locations will be confirmed and how quickly the rollout will proceed.

As Massmart reshapes its portfolio and Walmart accelerates its brand presence, the country’s competitive retail landscape appears set for further transformation.
