Woolworths increases security nationwide after explosions at two South African stores

Woolworths has introduced heightened security measures across its South African operations after two separate explosions struck its stores within a 24-hour period, prompting a major investigation by law enforcement authorities.

The retailer has deployed specialist bomb-sniffing dogs to branches around the country as part of efforts to reassure customers and employees while investigators work to determine who was responsible for the incidents.

Images shared by the company on social media showed canine units conducting security sweeps at multiple locations. Woolworths thanked the handlers and dogs for helping strengthen safety measures at its stores during a period of uncertainty.

The incidents occurred at branches in Pretoria and Bloemfontein and have raised concerns about the possibility of coordinated attacks targeting one of South Africa’s largest retail chains.

Explosions occurred while stores were closed

According to information released by the retailer, the first explosion took place during the early hours of 28 May at its Menlyn Park store in Pretoria. A second blast was reported less than 24 hours later at the company’s Preller Square branch in Bloemfontein.

Both incidents happened between 01:00 and 02:00 while the stores were closed to the public, significantly reducing the risk of casualties.

No injuries were reported in either case. However, Woolworths acknowledged that some employees were left distressed by the incidents and said support had been made available to affected staff members.

Following the explosions, members of the South African Police Service conducted immediate searches of the affected premises and surrounding areas to ensure there were no additional threats.

The retailer said it is cooperating fully with investigators and has engaged independent forensic specialists to assist with security assessments and evidence gathering.

Hawks lead investigation into motive

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, has since assumed responsibility for the investigation.

Authorities have not yet identified any suspects and have not disclosed whether the two incidents are linked. Investigators are also still working to establish the motive behind the attacks.

While the Menlyn Park branch has resumed operations, the Preller Square store remains temporarily closed as forensic teams continue processing the scene.

Although South Africa has experienced isolated incidents involving explosive devices in the past, attacks targeting major retail outlets remain relatively uncommon. Security analysts note that such incidents often require extensive forensic investigation before authorities can determine whether they were criminal, politically motivated, or linked to other causes.

Woolworths has sought to reassure customers that operations will continue as normal despite the security concerns.

The company stated that targeted attacks would not disrupt its commitment to serving customers and maintaining business continuity across its national store network.

As the investigation progresses, additional security resources, intelligence support and preventive measures are expected to remain in place at stores nationwide.
